access Spam Assassin BOX ?

Hello,

I have enabled Spam Assassin and Spam Box for a client on my server, but i fail to understand how do we access this SPAM box?

I contacted the Cpanel team and they say i need to access it in this format :-

[email protected]/spam
password

The password would be whatever the password is for the E-Mail account. If you have any questions, please let me know.


But what is the user name in this place, the user has many email ids under that domain and i also don't see any Email ID by the name of SPAM.

So could some one be kind enough to lead me further?

You need to check it with an IMAP mail client like Horde, Squirrel Mail or Neomail. Your POP email client software won't find it.

Physically, the catchall spam box is at
/home/yourusername/mail/spam

The other POP Account spamboxes are located at
/home/yourusername/mail/yourdomainname.com/popaccountusername/spam

Spam Box Login

I understand the basic functionalities of the spam box, but I too am having difficulties in understanding how to pickup/delete the messages using the spam box login. At this point, I need to login to WHM every few days and delete the thousands of spam messages sitting in the mail queue for the 30 domains on my server. This is inefficient.

I created an account called [email protected] and accessed it via Horde, but as you probably guessed, there wasn't anything in the Inbox.

I have many users in several states on the domain in question, most of which aren't computer-literate and I do not want to have to explain to each of them individually how to clear their spam box, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to access it by setting the account up as an IMAP account (not a POP3 like usual) then when you put the address in, just put [email protected]/spam.

Do I have to setup again the same account but with /spam or change somewhere in current setup ?

Hi dxer,

What Jeff75 meant was, Using your mail Client example ( Out look Express ) create another email account and set it to be IMAP instead of POP.

Although i haven't setup the mail client to access the mails but yes webmail did solve my problem .

What you need to do is, Activate Spam Assassin on your domain under Webmail.

After this, try to access webmail with your master user name and password,( Remember the master username will not be appended with "@domain.com " to access webmail )

Once you log in, Select Horde > Mail and then from the Top right hand corner in the drop down menu you will see "SPAM".
Select that and it will list all the SPAM that it has blocked after it was activated on this domain.

PLEASE NOTE :- Incase if you have a redirect set on your main account, then in this case you will need to access your redirect mail account instead of the main email account.

I tried using Outlook Express as Nitromax suggested and it worked! Months ago POP would not access the boxes, in fact it specifies IMAP only in the Bluelagoon Cpanel theme.

I still prefer Webmail to check the boxes since the Spam never gets downloaded to your computer.

Neomail and Horde display the boxes fine, in Squirrelmail you need to use the "Subscribe" feature.

CPanel / Spam Assassin are great tools if you can just keep up with the changes. :p

You mean I have to do this for each email address I've set up?

I have been reading this thread.
the responses seem to be making some assumptions. For example:

If someone has been using the system a while they may understand what you are saying here. However, I don't get it. When I make guesses, I don't get any results. 404.

Can you please make up and example with full URL address, so that I can try this?
ex: http://www.somename.com/home/joejones/mail/spam
Is this what you are trying to convey?

Also, wouldyou collect all the questions and answers and update your cpanel instructions?

To check email without downloading it you can use something like Magic Mail, see http://mmm3.sourceforge.net/

Steve, email is not accesible from the web (other than using the webmail interface). You need either a POP3 client, an IMAP client, or access to a shell.

I already can get emails on the web and with my client.
This is not my problem.

As I stated above, the description of the locations for getting to the spam box is not clear.

I was asking for clarity of the locations.

Actually charlie's description of locations couldn't be more precise:
/home/yourusername/mail/spam
That's the absolute path to the spam boxes. Maybe you'd like to read some basic tutorial like http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/ to understand it better.

in my IE Address box?

I tried that and I got a 404 error.

I guess what is clear to you is not clear to me.

As for a tutorial, if I am interested in learning more stuff I will consider it.

right now, I just want to know exactly what I need to type, into what application and into what location in that application.

There are several ways to access the email spam boxes.

This will probably be the easiest for those with no Linux knowledge.
Assuming your domain is steve.com
In your browser address bar type
http://www.steve.com/webmail/
In the boxes that appear type the username and password of the email account spambox you wish to check.
The default account is just the username and password of your main account. Other POP acccounts you created for the domain require the entire email address.
Example: The main account username syntax is steve
The additional accounts usernames are [email protected], [email protected], etc.
From the next screen choose Neomail
If you never used neomail before it may ask you for a quick set up, accept the defaults.
In the upper left corner of the Neomail screen scroll down the inbox until you get to "spam" (not spam.pop)
Click once and read your spam email.
Make sure" Neomail Trash" displays in the MOVE box
Click the little ALL box,
Click the "move" button
Click the little yellow trash can
Click the little blue and white X to loguut

REPEAT for EVERY mail account on the domain.

Alternatively,Anytime you see an address of /home/anything
You need to Shell, FTP, or Cpanel File Manager to the location specified.

This is great info.

I couldn't find neomail. I found horde and squirrelmail.

Do I have to do something special to get neomail?

All three show up for me. Whoever set up your Cpanel must have disabled it, or perhaps its the skin ypu use. I use BlueLagoon. . I suggested Neomail only because its the simplest to use to find the spam boxes.

Horde will also work fine. In fact it has an added benefit. Logging in with your master domain username and password allows you to see ALL the spam boxes for all the addresses that use your domain name. With Neomail you had to log into each account.

Squirrelmail requires you to use a Squirrelmail function called subscribe in order to put the spam boxes in the list. The subscribe feature is listed under Folders.

MAKE SURE TO EMPTY THEM PERIODICALLY. So much spam can build up in the mail boxes, that you can go over quota.

Thanks for the input.

I think I am giving up. I don't like the idea of going to the web to review the spam box.

I want to be able to download it to outlook (I know how to set up custom folders).

This all seems like too much work, when I have a colleague in the anti-spam business, who sets everything up for his clients and it's no hassle at all.

so far, I find the cpanel, irritatingly difficult to use. I wish they didn't play with hiding the urls of the different pages. When I get a 404, and then hit the back button, it takes me back to the home, even though that's not where I've been.

I think that when my year is up with my hosting company, I will go somewhere else.
